Princeton University Press

The following is a selection of projects I’ve worked on as a member of the Creative Media Lab at Princeton University Press (PUP). My roles involved visual direction, storyboarding, sourcing assets, and animation.

Viral Justice

2022

Viral Justice by Ruha Benjamin is a part memoir, part manifesto about how we can transform society through the choices we make every day. The book tackles important issues related to race, justice, and structural changes. The biggest challenge was finding a way to distill these large ideas down into a 30-second promotional trailer.

The resulting animation includes a short script voiced by the author and accompanying visuals that match the design of the cover.

In addition to this trailer, I designed many of the remaining marketing assets, including web ads, print ads, social media posts, bookmarks, and a shorter animated announcement for the audiobook.

The Joy of Science

2022

A trailer commemorating Jim Al-Khalili’s second book with PUP. The voice-over, narrated by the author, goes into the science behind a rainbow. The largest problem to solve was how to make scientific graphics look engaging. The result is a colorful and informative video using assets created entirely in Adobe Illustrator and After Effects.

In Praise of Good Bookstores

2022

With this book trailer I had the opportunity to work with illustrations PUP commissioned for the cover design and promotional material. The biggest challenge was crafting a narrative with just text and image since there was no voice-over for this trailer. I had to strike a balance between the amount of copy that appears on the screen, the fast pacing of the trailer, and conveying what the book was about.

In addition to this trailer, I also designed post cards, tote bags, book tour posters, and web ads as part of this book’s marketing campaign.

A Brief Welcome to the Universe

2021

A Brief Welcome to the Universe is a more accessible version of Neil deGrasse Tyson, et. al.’s book Welcome to the Universe. The visual direction was inspired by sci-fi arcade games as a way to signal that this book provides an easy entry to an otherwise intense field of study. Keeping with the arcade feel, I added subtle chromatic aberration and scan lines. This trailer was lots of fun to make and all of the visuals were made in After Effects. As part of this book’s marketing campaign, this trailer ran in a Condé Nast crown unit ad.
