Research Open House 2025

Research Open House 2025 is an annual exhibition of student work hosted at Pratt Institute’s Research Yard. The exhibited projects highlight the latest advancements in material science and fabrication. The 2025 identity features custom type designed to match the Pratt Research Yard identity. In addition to the custom type, I also worked on visual direction, client presentation, and identity application.

The exterior angles of the letterforms match the chevrons in the Research Yard logo. The secondary typeface and the color palette both were chosen from the Pratt Institute visual identity guidelines.

Several techniques were used to make the custom type evoke experimentation. Monospace, reverse contrast, and rounded interior angles all influenced the type in unconventional ways. These decisions were amplified after beveling the edges and adding texture. The beveled “spine” creates an interesting shape when the round interior angles meet the straight exterior angles. Similarly, the metallic texture acts in an interesting way around corners.
